Capitol Inside: GOP Pillars Make Pitch for Hispanic House Freshman in Letter that Stirs Talk on Future Statewide Campaign

A handful of highly prominent Texas Republicans have teamed up to raise money for a first-term Hispanic state lawmaker who they’re touting as “a new kind of conservative leader” who’s been fighting to protect a big-tent approach that’s critical to the GOP’s future here.

The heavy-hitter Republicans in question heaped considerable praise on GOP State Rep. Jason Villalba of Dallas in a fundraising letter that they sent to prospective donors on his behalf about 10 days ago. The letter was signed by Dallas-area investors Harlan Crow and Ross Perot Jr. along with former U.S. Senate member Kay Bailey Hutchison, Houston beer distributor John Nau and legendary ex-Dallas Cowboy quarterback Roger Staubach.
