Rep. Villalba Statement on School Finance Decision

August 28, 2014

DALLAS – Texas State Representative Jason Villalba (District 114) released the following statement following today’s ruling by 250th District Court Judge John Dietz in the school finance lawsuit:

“Even though the Republican lead Legislature invested over four billion dollars into our public schools during the last legislative session, Judge Dietz, in his ruling today, determined that our current public school finance system remains unconstitutional.

“While I fundamentally disagree with Judge Dietz’ reasoning and have confidence that Attorney General Abbott will prevail on appeal, it is clear to me that the Legislature must act boldly and decisively in the next legislative session to address this complex and critically important issue once and for all.

“Antiquated and ineffective constructs such as Robin Hood and quasi state-wide property taxes must be eliminated if we are to craft a fair and reasonable finance system that works for all of our Texas public school students.

“I will work tirelessly with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to see that we find common-sense solutions that work for all Texas families.”
